Reasons I believe Self Employed Women Would Benefit From Knowing A Coach

5 Reasons Self-Employed Women Should Have a Coach Business coaches are not just for those starting up their business. They’re for newbies and veterans alike. They’re for women who are shifting gears and for those who are trying to find their way. I’ve talked before about what a coach does and why women hire coaches. Here are five reasons that all self-employed women should have a coach on their side. There are LOTS of people willing to tell you what you should do. But who do you have helping you figure out what you want to do? Coaches don’t tell you what to do or not to do. Coaches are there to guide you through sorting things out and looking at things from different angles. Coaches empower you to make your own decisions—not do what they think is right but rather what you think is right. None of us can…

What is Coaching?

If you’ve never worked with a coach before, you might be confused about what a coach actually does. Every coach has their own style and focus, so you may have gotten mixed signals. I always tell prospective clients to do their research. Find a coach whose style and vibe really works for you. Someone whose philosophy you believe will get you where you want to go in business. After being in business for so long, I’ve gathered others’ perspectives on what coaching really is. Here, you’ll find feedback from my clients and quotes from professionals in the field who really speak to me. I think this truly highlights my philosophy and the way I work with clients. (Of course, all client information is confidential; client quotes are published with permission.) Do the following definitions of coaching resonate with you? If so, I encourage you to sign up for a Clarity…

How to Choose the Business Coach That’s Right for You

Ask 100 successful business owners what the secret is to their success and you’re likely to get about that many different answers. But I’ll bet that the one that comes up the most often is, “I hired a business coach.” Working with a business coach can be life-changing. But finding the one who gets you the results you’re looking for can be a challenge. After all, there’s as many different coaching styles as there are waves in the ocean.  With the coaching industry being largely unregulated, each coach can offer whatever services she wants and call it “coaching.” Even as a coach myself, it’s a challenge to talk to other coaches about services—because they’re always so different from one another. That makes it hard for you, as a consumer, to make an educated decision about coaching. If you’re planning to start working with a business coach, first decide what role…

Your business and mercury retrograde - blog title

Mercury Retrograde

You’ve likely heard me talk about Mercury Retrograde and how it impacts my business and my life. The truth is, I used to be a non-believer. I thought it was all woo-woo stuff; nothing I needed to concern myself with. But then I started to see the correlation between Mercury Retrograde and the craziness that ensues during those times of year. A Little Astrology Lesson As you know, the planets are always in motion and each of them impacts us on Earth in different ways. When they go into retrograde, they appear to be moving backward in orbit. (Think of a car traveling in the same direction as you that suddenly slows down as it’s passing you. It might look like it’s going backward.) Because Mercury is the closest to the sun, its orbit is much shorter than ours, causing it to go into retrograde several times a year. And…

The 40 Truths about Coach Erin

Working with a coach is pretty personal. You’re expected to dive into some deep topics, often with someone you don’t know very well. I want to make sure you know me–and some of my quirks. Not only does this humanize me a bit, but it’s just fun to get to know people on a different level. I love overcooked oatmeal. I love cold “next day” oatmeal. I sometimes snort when I laugh. I was a chronic nail biter till my mid 30’s. I love being outdoors but hate bugs and the smell of bug spray. I love to sing and secretly record myself singing and then quickly delete it. When I was in high school, I would dress up like a cowboy on Friday nights. I was my highschool mascot, a Wrangler (hence the dressing up like a cowboy). Whatever temperature it is outside is the temperature I am. If it’s…

Free coaching sessions: why I don't offer them - blog title

Why I don’t offer a free coaching sessions

In the coaching industry it has become common practice to offer free initial sessions. Most often these are called discovery sessions. The “behind the scenes” strategy to these sessions is to help you, the client, discover all the work you need to do on your life, business or other area the coach specializes in. Once you see how much work you have to do, you’ll want more coaching. You’ll have built a “relationship” with the coach so it will be a natural transition to selling you services, programs or products. When I ask my current clients what they think about free discovery sessions, they say, “I wouldn’t sign up.” They believe it would be a pressured sales pitch and doubt they would gain any value from it. So, if the women I love to coach wouldn’t sign-up, why would I off free discovery sessions? If I did, I would actually…

What I Love About Running My Business From Home

The Home Business Tax Deductions: Let’s face it, having my office at home comes with a long list of tax deductions. Because I see clients and host group coaching events from my home there are a number of things that qualify as a full or partial deduction. Gotta love being able to write off part of your electric bill, mortgage, property tax and more. The Financial SAVINGS: There are so many more savings than just tax deductions. Since I work from home my family was able to exist with one car. This meant less money spent on car payments, insurance and gas. I just “borrow the car” from hubby for networking or business errands. I’ve also saved money on dining out. No more fast food or expensive take-out for lunches. It’s leftovers and made-at-home lunches for me. Plus, there is savings in re-using lunch bags, Ziplocks and Tupperware, too. Oh,…

My 10 Year Business Journey

A Look Back at My Business Journey It’s crazy to think that 2006 is my 10 year coaching anniversary. The time has flown by. It seems like it was just a few months ago that I was sitting in an adviser’s office at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts. And, ironically, I wasn’t there to become a coach. I was there because I wanted to be an aesthetician. I had already owned my own business in the beauty industry and I believed I was ready to once again open my own business. Little did I know that a much bigger plan would unfold during this meeting, changing my life drastically. At this meeting, I was introduced to the coaching program because the adviser saw something in me–my natural curiosity about human nature and the leadership position with the non-profit I was working for at the time–that opened up a new…

The Story Behind My Business Name

Oh man! Picking your business name is one of the first challenges many self employed women face. And I was no different. Choosing my business name was certainly one of the challenges I ran into when starting my business. I remember sitting around the dining room table with my hubby tossing around all kinds of names but none felt quite perfect. I, of course, then turned to my 2nd best friend, Google (because hubby will always be my bestest friend). I browsed, searched and browsed some more. I had pages and pages of notes on what “the experts” suggested. I headed back to the dining room table with hubby and we tossed words around once again.  And again, I didn’t find anything that was perfect. I did more research. I took more notes. I finally decided that I would go with Prospective Perceptions. Go ahead, try and say that three…

How I got started in coaching

How I got started in coaching I believe my journey to coaching differs from many coaches out there. When I meet other coaches through networking, many tell me of how they found themselves burnt out at their jobs. Some share that they have gone through a traumatic shift in their relationships. Most of them mention that they found coaching through someone else who was a coach or training to be a coach.I didn’t even know what a coach was or how coaching worked. I did however have a “wake up call” as many would say. A wake up call that led me to a profession that feels custom made for me. The catalyst toward me becoming a coach was an MRI.   I was knee deep into planning a large event for the non-profit I worked for. My stress was a bit high. It all took its toll. I had…

The Coach’s Cottage

The Coach’s Cottage (map here) is truly a metaphor for business ownership and the transformation that happens through coaching. Like the clients I coach, my home, The Coach’s Cottage, is ever-evolving and changing. It’s where all my in-person coaching sessions happen.  It’s a comfortable space where you can just be you.  The Coach’s Cottage is a cozy spot in North Central Phoenix.  (map here) It welcomes you to relax, breathe deep and dive into the depths of who you are as a self-employed woman. Its comfortable atmosphere opens the doors to your mind as you shape the vision you hold for your business and develop a plan to get you there.   Built in 1962 and in a steady state of remodel since my husband and I purchased it in 2002, The Cottage has been my home office since I opened my business in 2006. It is an integral partner in…

When to Hire a Coach: One Client's Perspective

When to Hire a Coach: A Client’s Perspective

guest post by Abby Herman, Write Solutions   You’ve been working in your business for a while but haven’t seen any growth. You’re frustrated with the advice your partner or family members are giving you about how to run your business. You feel like you’re working more than ever, but your bottom line doesn’t show it. You think you’ll never be as successful as all those business owners in your Facebook groups. There are many reasons why people turn to a business coach to help get their business back on track—or to start up a business. For some, admitting they need help is often the first step. And it’s hard. It’s also hard to pay someone to tell you why you’re not making any money or what you’re doing wrong in your business. But if you’re feeling stuck or stressed, a coach could be just the thing that helps get…

My Brand Colors

I first picked colors based on what “the experts” said the colors represented and I liked them well enough that I used those colors for the first eight years of my business. But, I was always tweaking things because it never felt “just right,” so like Goldilocks I kept trying different things. This tweaking lasted two more years. UGH! Then, I worked with a personal stylist on my own personal color pallet and had a HUGE A-HA! I looked at the colors and realized that over half of the colors would fall into blue. From true blue to teal blue to blue green. These were the colors I naturally was drawn to as they were abundant in my closet. It was a big light bulb for me as to why my brand colors did not feel right. Yes, the colors represented what I offered but I never felt at home…

Uniquely Me: Coach Erin

Most of us in business have been told we should know what makes us unique. What is it that makes you different than the others in your industry? So, I decided to spend some time and ponder — what is it that makes me unique? Here’s just a few things I believe are unique about me as a business coach: I work full time in my business and have since 2006. I work from my home office. Majority of my clients work from a home office. Majority of the women I coach own their own unique service based, product/event enhanced business where the majority of their income comes from being in direct service to their clients. My clients don’t have, nor do they ever see having, large teams of employees.  They might have an assistant, hire an accountant or even have someone help them out with website or content marketing, but…

Coach Erin’s One Word Experience

Have you ever heard about choosing ONE WORD to focus on during your New Year? I never knew others were doing it and I don’t know where it originated but I have heard through Facebook Groups that Danielle LaPorte has a free workbook (or something of the like) that can guide you through to finding your one word. Well, I don’t know when it became trendy but I’ve been choosing one word since 2008. I started choosing one word when I transitioned from working my job to owning my own business. I was swirling in too many ideas, too many thoughts and, let’s be honest, too much fear. I can still remember sitting at my desk and having an ah-ha moment. I decided I wasn’t going to focus on EVERYTHING in my first year in business. Instead, I decided to focus only on one thing at time. Now, that doesn’t mean…

Pricing is NOT about worth - blog title

Pricing Is Not About “Worth”

There’s this phrase-a phrase I hear often. A phrase that almost feels like it’s an automated response yet the truth is it’s more likely just a very ego attractive marketing message that quite honestly I’m afraid is doing more harm than good. This phrase most commonly sounds like “you need to charge what you’re worth” or “I’m finally charging what I’m worth.” It’s repeated by many self employed women, professional business owners and entrepreneurs. It’s a powerful message. A message even I once believed wholeheartedly. It’s power is in moving women to charge more for their services and create a more financially profitable business. I believe it’s intentions could be good yet the outcomes I see it producing seem to be less than ideal. It concerns me because it turns business owners away from focusing on their clients needs as a priority and instead allows their bank account to become…

Why Women Hire A Business Coach?

5 reasons women hire a business coach: 1. You’re sitting there by yourself with thousands of ideas and what-ifs and they are only amplifying things like fear, self-doubt, uncertainty. Hiring a coach allows you to get the ideas and what-ifs out onto paper where you can sort through them, define steps to implement or release them, take action and work on them.  In doing so you’ll eliminate fear and add confidence and clarity to your decision making. 2. You have a great idea and you think about it and think about it OR you have a challenge, problem or situation and you think about it and think . You find you’re going around and around which leads you to running in circles and ending up in the same place you started… Hiring a coach allows a new set of eyes to see your idea or your problem from a new perspective which…

Best Places for Marketing

To find the best places to put your marketing message, you must first know more about your ideal client so, ask yourself: Where does my client hang out? Where is my client at on a daily basis? If my client were to go somewhere today where would they go? Who knows my client and where is that person at today? What does my client read? What does my client listen to? What does my client like to do? For example:  If your ideal client is a mom, she may likely be at their child’s school on an almost daily basis, or could be at the child’s bus stop in the mornings or afternoons, or might be at their child’s sporting events.  She may even be going on a school field trip to places like the zoo.  If she is a working mom she may be either at their job or at a networking event.  If she is a stay…

Steps To Build Your Own Business

9 Steps To Building Your Own Business   step 1: Clear Vision It is important to have a clear vision of what you want your business and life to look like so you can easily integrate them to craft the life you desire. step 2: Mission A mission is something that you likely will not achieve on your own.  Rather, you will achieve a piece of it as it is so big and such a large problem that there is likely no way you alone will ever achieve this mission. Your mission will be the core of your company/business, it provides you and your business with clarity direction and focus. step 3: Ideal Client Profile Identifying your ideal client takes time, but in the long run it will save you time and create a better return on your financial investment in marketing. The clearer you are on who you service, the easier…

During my Clarity Creator, Erin was able to take what I felt was disorganized thinking or a brain dump, and pull out key information, providing clarity.  We spent much of our time combing through client intake processes, examining what happens first, second, third etc. We also clarified who my clients are, and talked about building service packages. I gained a lot of clarity!

My session felt very comfortable and exceeded my expectations. If you’re thinking of working with Coach Erin, I would definitely encourage you to do so. The little time I've spent with Erin has been valuable and solidified my desire and decision to proceed further with coaching.
